Her story

I was sitting next to my father at the kitchen table having supper. My sister sat across from me, her elbows on the table and her little head hanging over her meal. She was crying.

“She’s gone.” She wallowed. “Our mom’s gone… she left us! And she’s never coming back.”

Tears were streaming down her cherub-like cheeks, her blonde hair, fluffy and clean, framing her big, blue eyes. She wore a blanket of sadness.

The topic of our mother, leaving us had come up for the first time since she had left us.

I put my fork down, got up on my knuckles and leaned across the table, looking my older sister in the eye and firmly said,

“You’re right she is gone ..and she’s never coming back. Our dad’s all we got now, and that’s just how it’s gonna be.”

I sat back down, grabbed my fork, and continued eating.

I was four, my sister was six.

My dad told me this story during Christmas 2019. It was the last Christmas I spent with him. We had a unique relationship, one of deep love, gratitude and service. He was the strongest influence I’ve had in my life, saving my life, then teaching me everything I know. He did it with grace and love, weaving resilience into the tapestry of who I am, without him and his love, I’d be nothing.

Because of him, my story isn’t one of survival; it’s a blueprint for rising. If you’ve ever felt broken or like there’s more to be had in this life, this book is for you.

With love and gratitude,

-Kait

This isn’t a memoir. It’s a mirror.

And a blueprint.
